Volunteer Opportunities
Interested in volunteering for the 2019 event?
In 2018, the “Festival” idea of Gettysburg’s Christmas celebration was born. And an estimated 10,000 people came! We realized that winter tourists and travelers wanted to join us in a celebration that showcased our vibrant, caring, historic community. We don’t want to lose our small town, family- friendly charm, so we decided our festival must grow in area and duration to fit everyone in! So… this year, 2019, we will celebrate over 3 days – December 6, 7, and 8. Our holiday happenings now encompass a large part of the downtown with more streets, businesses, churches, museums, nonprofits, and residents taking an active part. It takes a community! And we are very proud of ours.
Pre-December you can help by talking up the event with your family, friends, and organizations you’re involved with. Do you know local groups/individuals that would like to grace our sidewalks in holiday attire of the past or present and interact with festival-goers in a way that would enrich our collective experience? Singing carols, playing an instrument, photo ops with a first person living history character, juggling, magic tricks, shaking jingle bells, dancing, historical interpretation, portraying Dickens’ characters, holiday storytelling are all possibilities. Please consider helping us with some volunteer time. First of all, please come to the festival; remember it is “rain or shine.” When you come please wear a smile, display “Christmas spirit,” and be ready to “pitch in “ where you see something that needs to be done. It would be a huge help if we all picked up that piece of litter, helped give directions to that lost visitor, or chimed in with the carolers as they sing along the streets. Beyond that we have lots of other opportunities…
A. Set Up Friday, December 6 & Saturday, December 7, 2019
On Friday many venues will need to be set up. Finishing touches will also have to be made to the Steinwehr Avenue “Winter Wonderland” both before and after the parade.
B. Parking Help Saturday, December 7, 2019
We are seeking volunteers that could help set-up, direct, collect money, and teardown the parking we will be having in various lots inside and just outside of the borough. (Needed for Saturday)
C. Information Giving Saturday, December 7, 2019
We need people that are willing to study maps and an information packet before the event to really know where activities, different transportation lines, and spaces are set up so they can give accurate information to event-goers. We will have stationary booths set up where you could sit to give out information as well as walkers who are” floating information/hospitality helpers.”(Needed for Saturday)
D. Program Monitoring Friday, December 6 & Saturday, December 7, 2019
We have several stages that will need volunteers to help with scheduling, set-up, and monitoring of the events Friday and Saturday, perhaps Sunday as well.
E. Clean Up Friday, December 6, Saturday, December 7 & Sunday, December 8, 2019
Help is needed all 3 days to keep any litter under control, to check on trash cans so they don’t overflow, and to assist with taking down set venues.
